The Problem with Big-Tech File Sharing: Google Drive, Dropbox, and Your Privacy

Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and WeTransfer are convenient. But convenience comes at a cost — and for file-sharing services, that cost is often your privacy. Let's look at what actually happens to your files on these platforms.

They Hold the Keys

All major cloud providers encrypt your data at rest. But they manage the encryption keys themselves. This means they can — and do — decrypt your files whenever they choose. Google's terms of service explicitly grant them the right to scan your content for policy enforcement. Dropbox's transparency reports show they comply with thousands of government data requests per year.

Content Scanning & Profiling

Most big-tech services scan uploaded files for various purposes:

• •ML training data — some services use uploaded content to improve AI models
• •Advertising profiles — inferring interests from file content and sharing patterns

None of this is hidden — it's in the terms of service. But few people read those terms before uploading sensitive files.

US Jurisdiction

Google, Dropbox, Microsoft, and WeTransfer's parent company are all subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act and National Security Letters. Even if your data is stored on a server in Frankfurt, the US parent company can be compelled to hand it over.

Convenience vs. Privacy

We're not saying you should never use Google Drive — it's great for collaboration. But when you need to transfer sensitive files to someone, you should use a tool designed for privacy from the ground up, not one designed for maximum data extraction.
